Board of Regents Student Committee (BORSC)

Thank you for your interest in the Board of Regents Student Committee!

BORSC exists to facilitate communication between St. Olaf students and the governing body of the college, the Board of Regents. BORSC accomplishes this facilitation by creating reports on issues that are relevant to all of students, staff and the Board.

BORSC primarily represents student concerns regarding both current and long range planning decisions of the college. It is the goal of BORSC to be actively involved with students throughout campus, and act as a representative of the collective student body.

The following positions are available for the 2012-2013 academic year:

BORSC Executive Assistant
Responsible for keeping minutes of BORSC meetings and overseeing the BORSC budget as well as possibly serving on a senate subcommittee. The BORSC Executive assistant will also serve as a member of the SGA Finance committee.

Public Relations Coordinator
The BORSC Public Relations Coordinator will be responsible for communicating to the student body the content of the reports and enhancing campus awareness of BORSC and their events. This will be accomplished through their responsibility over the Hill Hype newsletter as well as committee reports.

Class Representatives and Members at-Large
Responsible for creating a dialogue between their class and the Board of Regents student committee.

Music Entertainment Committee (MEC)

The Music Entertainment Committee (MEC) devotes its time to organizing diverse concerts, music events, and other forms of music entertainment that cater to the varied interests of St. Olaf students. The purpose of these events is to provide students an escape from academic pressure through music and to give them an opportunity to become involved in campus life. MEC provides entertaining and recreational experiences, both in large and small venues, in social settings for students of all interests.

Although there are many different positions available on MEC, it should be noted that as a member of MEC, one must participate in the events we put on, and every member is expected to help out with all events even if it is not their own. Putting on concerts, tabling, and giving input and feedback are all responsibilities that are shared equally between members of the group. We are a team!

Member-at-large
Responsible for helping out the team by tabling and putting on concerts as well as giving input and feedback.

Campus Bands
Responsible for managing campus band festivals and shows

Mane Stage Events
Responsible for putting together the “big” shows of the year, including Fall and Spring concerts.

Financial Officer (paid position)
Responsible for MEC’s budget and also expected to participate as a member

Marketing and Communications Officer (paid position)
In charge of getting the word out to the student population for all kinds of MEC events. Applicants should be able to think of innovative marketing techniques as well as design cool posters.

Political Awareness Committee (PAC)

Weekly Events Coordinator (x2)

  • Member of the PAC Executive Committee
  • Responsible for the planning of “weekly events” defined as a non-contracted event.
  • Responsible for the logistics of the events such as time and date setting, determining equipment needed, and room reservations.
  • Required to attend weekly executive meeting, and PAC events.
  • Blog requirement of (3) posts/semester.

Special Events Coordinator (x2)

  • Member of the PAC Executive Committee
  • Responsible for organizing and gathering information for “special events” defined as our contracted events such as the fall and spring speakers.
  • Responsible to get in touch with speakers agents to find dates available, speaking cost, and travel requirements.
  • Required to attend weekly executive meeting, and PAC events.
  • Blog requirement of (3) posts/semester

Election Coordinator (1)

  • Member of the PAC Executive Committee
  • Responsible for planning nonpartisan, PAC sponsored, election events such as voter registration drives, and candidate information events.
  • Elections responsible for are Minnesota Senate District 20, Minnesota House District 20B, U.S. Senate, U.S. House Congressional District 2, and of course the presidential election.
  • Post-election, this position will be moved to one of the other subcommittees (weekly, special, liaison, etc.)
  • Required to attend weekly executive meeting, and PAC events.
  • Blog requirement of (3) posts/semester

Multicultural Liaison (1)

  • Member of the PAC Executive Committee
  • Serve as PAC’s liaison with organizations and committees addressing multicultural issues, special weeks, months, etc.
  • Maintain a working relationship with the Director of Multicultural Student Services in order to further communication between MCSS and PAC.
  • Attend multicultural group meetings as necessary or invited.
  • Required to attend weekly executive meeting, and PAC events.
  • Blog requirement of (3) posts/semester

Executive Assistant (1)

  • Responsible for keeping an agenda of all executive meetings.
  • Responsible for editing blog submissions for spelling and grammar mistakes.
  • Responsible for updating the PAC Gmail Calendar
  • Required to attend weekly executive meeting, and PAC events
  • Required to write short summary blogs of all PAC events

Marketing and Communications Officer (x2)

  • Enhance campus awareness of PAC and its events
  • Communicate with SGA Marketing Communications Officers in order to effectively perform public relations responsibilities. (bi-weekly meetings)
  • Create effective strategy to raise participation in PAC events, not only attendance.

Financial Officer (1)

  • Oversee PAC spending and budgets
  • Serve as a member of the SGA Finance Committee

Student Alumni Association (SAA)

Thank you for your interest in SAA! Our mission is to connect current students with alumni. We offer many fun, informal events throughout the year that provide networking opportunities. These are a great way for students and alumni to build a connection and hopefully maintain it in the future. This branch is for you if you want to foster connections with alumni!

Marketing & Communications Officer (Stipend provided)
The MCO is in charge of promoting SAA and our events. He or she will make posters, update the social media online, and think of new and innovative ways to promote SAA. Some familiarity with Photoshop is required. The position is paid and also serves on the Communications Team of SGA.

Executive Assistant
He or she will assist the coordinator in preparation for the meetings and organization. It is a great way to connect with the coordinator and with alumni.

Student Activities Committee (SAC)

Although SAC is broken up into five subcommittees, it should be noted that as a member of SAC itself everyone must participate in the events we put on, and every member is expected to help out with each subcommittee even if it is not their own. Hosting events, showing movies, tabling, and giving input and feedback are all responsibilities that are shared equally between members of the group. We are a team!

Ole Traditions Subcommittee
As a member of our Ole Traditions subcommittee, you will get the opportunity to help plan Homecoming Week—including thinking of a theme, ideas for theme-related activities and events, booking and hosting those events, finding and ordering supplies needed for the week, selling t-shirts, and decorating the campus for homecoming. You will also you will get the opportunity help plan our annual President’s Ball in the spring—including thinking of a theme, ideas for food and invitations, decorations, and setting everything up in Skogland.

Special Events Subcommittee
As a member of our Special Events subcommittee, you are given the chance to book and host events throughout the year for the student body. We are looking for people who are creative and innovative—who can come up with fun new ideas to bring to campus. Responsibilities include booking and hosting events, along with ordering any food/supplies needed for those events/activities. Superfan is also part of Special Events this coming year. This includes being in charge of getting students pumped to come to campus sporting events! You will come up with ideas and ways to promote big games and get fans to come out and cheer for our fellow Oles.

Off-Campus Subcommittee
As a member of our Off-Campus subcommittee, you get the freedom to find and plan events off campus for students to partake in. These can be sporting events, plays, musicals, concerts, bowling, etc. The possibilities are endless. Responsibilities include finding information about the events, ordering tickets, setting student prices and organizing tabling.

Movies
As a member of our Movies Subcommittee you will get the opportunity to pick and choose movies that are played in Viking Theater every weekend. Responsibilities include ordering movies and posters, managing an Excel spreadsheet, training others how to play movies, and occasionally be on call during weekends.

Student Organizations Committee (SOC)

Executive Assistant

  • Keep and distribute minutes of all SOC meetings
  • Aid SOC coordinator in maintaining contact with student organizations and coordinating SOC programs
  • Assist the SOC Coordinator in maintaining the SOC Budget and other tasks that may require assistance

The SORC Manager

  • Maintain SORC materials for use by organizations
  • Publicize all SOC programs; namely the Fall Co-Curricular Fair and Lutefest in the spring
  • Help the SOC Coordinator determine the rules and regulations of the SORC and post these rules so they are visible to students using the SORC

The Organization Representatives

  • Inform organization leader(s) of SOC decisions regarding funding and organization recognition
  • Bring organization concerns to SOC

The First Year Representative

  • Serve on SOC subcommittees as needed
  • Communicate with organizations, such as notifying them of SOC decisions, as needed
  • Serve as the liaison between the committee and First-Year students while gaining a working knowledge of how the committee functions

Student Organization Leaders

  • Observe all SOC and SORC policies
  • Use SOC allocated monies in accordance with SGA policy, see Article IV of SOC Constitution
  • Attend a financial meeting once a year
  • Failure to abide by these guidelines could result in sanctions by SOC

Volunteer Network (VN)

Assistant Coordinator
The Assistant Coordinator will work closely with the VN coordinator and assist them with administrative work involving event planning, committee logistics and general executive tasks. They should also be knowledgeable about the way VN is run and be an approachable resource for students who have questions about volunteering.

Special Projects Coordinator
The Special Projects Coordinator will plan and organize specific annual VN events, including the VN Halloween Party, the Annual Fly-in, and other student volunteer events on campus.

Program Director
The VN Program Director is responsible for facilitating communication between the executive committee and all VN organizations. They will be in charge of ensuring that VN programs are following our written bylaws and stipulations.

Marketing and Communications Officer
The MCO must have an eye for advertising and work with the committee to create fun and efficient ways to advertise volunteer events and organizations on campus. They will be responsible for creating posters, logos, and advertisements that bring awareness of VN and its programs around campus.

Campus Community Connections Officer
This position is responsible for facilitating communication between the VN committee and the community members in Northfield. They will work to connect the VN committee to appropriate community contacts when planning events on and off campus.

Financial Officer
VN Financial Officer is in charge of keeping track of the annual VN budget. They are responsible for facilitating communication between the executive committee and VN organizations looking for funding.

Member-at-Large
General VN committee members will be active participants in VN events and activities. They will assist other committee members in the brainstorming, planning and working at VN events.
