Meet Catherine Haines — SGA President
Traveling from Waukesha, Wis. to study chemistry and education, Catherine has made the St. Olaf experience her own. Her favorite things to do on campus are order a Pause pizza and see a movie in Viking. You may have also seen her working at a desk down in Skoglund.
Catherine has made the Student Activities Committee (SAC) of SGA her baby. Beginning as a first-year member, she served on the President’s Ball subcommittee; sophomore year, she chaired Homecoming. Last year, as a junior, Catherine leads SAC as coordinator, and also served as a senator and executive team member. She has seen firsthand the inner workings of SGA.
Meet Matt Alveshere — SGA Vice President
An economics and political science major from Woodbury, Minn., Matt is an Ole to his very core. Whether it is singing “Um Ya Ya!” with the accordion club or helping students out in the registrar’s office, Matt is meant for the Hill.
Matt has represented students for three years as a member of the Student Senate: As a first year, Matt served as Ellingson Hall senator. For the past two years, Matt has worked on the Faculty Governance Committee protecting student interests. In addition, Matt served as Senate parliamentarian and chair of the Bylaws subcommittee. Matt has a real understanding of the Student Senate.
With Catherine’s committee experience and Matt’s Senate experience, the two are enthusiastic about serving as this year’s President and Vice President team!
Our Vision
As representatives of the student body, the President and Vice President work closely with the coordinators of the eleven branches of SGA to organize countless events throughout the year. They meet regularly with the deans and President of the college to discuss issues of concern for the student body. Also under the breath of their leadership is the Student Senate – a forum for open discussion of student initiatives and projects.
As the President and Vice President for ‘12-’13, we have identified a variety of issues to address this year. These include transparency and student involvement in SGA, efficiency of resources, student work, on-campus parking, and transportation options. But we also want to hear your ideas. What type of programming would you like to see? What would you like President Anderson or the Regents to know? How can we make St. Olaf even better?
SGA is here to serve Oles. Help us out by getting in contact with us below or dropping by the Office of Student Activities (BC 107) to tell us what’s on your mind.

We want to hear your thoughts on what you want St. Olaf to do for you. Get in touch with us by filling out the contact form below!
