Lutefest Inside

Saturday, May 8, 2010 | General Information

Due to the soaking rain of yesterday and temps not predicted to go above 44 (at noon) with 17 mph winds, Lutefest will be held inside.

NO WORRIES! Lutefest will still be full of all its glory. Everything that was planned for outside will be inside. All of the Student Org Tables will be in the Pause Pool Room. Our artists (like the Balloon Guy, the Magic Magician Dude and the awesome Mentalist Guy, among others….) will be roaming around Buntrock throughout the day.

You can also get a run down of the day’s events on the TV screens around Buntrock.

We hope you enjoy the day!

St. Olaf Honor Council Elections

Tuesday, April 27, 2010 | General Information

General Elections!
Vote for your class’s representatives to the Honor Council here!

This year’s candidates are:
Class of 2011: Kathryn A Weaver
Class of 2012: Rudyard Dyer
Class of 2013: Jennifer Arnspong and Kathryn Geskermann

What is the Honor Council?

The Honor Council is the student-led branch of the college judiciary that oversees the Honor Code on all tests and examinations given at St. Olaf. Composed of ten students and a faculty adviser, the Honor Council is responsible for investigating possible violations of the Honor Code, holding hearings, and administering penalties to students found responsible of violating the Honor Code.

What’s new for the Honor Council?

The Honor Council has two major events going on this spring: a student-wide referendum on proposed changes to its Constitution and elections for new members. The dates for these events are:

  • Wednesday, April 28 – Applications for new members are due.
  • Thursday, April 29 – Student-wide referendum on amendments to the Honor Council’s Constitution
  • Monday, May 3 – Saturday, May 8 – General election for new members
  • Thursday, May 13 – Tentative faculty vote on Constitutional amendments

Constitutional Amendments

The Honor Council is currently in the process of amending its constitution, which requires votes before the SGA Senate, the student body, and the faculty. In sum, these changes:

  • Re-state the Honor Code pledge to include “I have neither given nor received assistance not explicitly approved by the professor…”
  • Begin keeping records of students found responsible of an Honor Code violation, to be used only by the Honor Council and the Dean of Students in assessing penalties for repeat violations of the Honor Code.
  • Include a new article within the Honor Council Constitution to include responsibilities of faculty members with respect to the Honor Code. Many of these responsibilities are already stated within the St. Olaf student handbook; adding them to the Constitution underscores that the Honor System is a joint faculty-student effort.
  • Reform the process by which officers (President, Vice President, Secretary) within the Honor Council are elected.
  • Clarify that Honor Council student body representatives must be elected by a majority vote; if more than two students run for the Honor Council, the Honor Council President will organize a primary.

The Senate approved the changes unanimously on April 20; the student body approved them in a referendum on April 29. They will go before the faculty for a vote on Thursday, May 13.

Lunch with the Board of Regents Request

Monday, April 26, 2010 | Board of Regents Student Committee

Thank you for your interest in the lunch. We are no longer taking requests at this time.

What we’re doing

This semester the Board of Regents Student Committee (BORSC) is hosting an opportunity for you to share your opinions with the Board of Regents! BORSC has been hard at work preparing a report to present to the Regents when they convene at St. Olaf on May 6. Consistent with the College’s efforts to offer a competitive, door-opening education, BORSC’s current report focuses on providing a comprehensive valuation of the St. Olaf experience. To do so, our report seeks to critically analyze the strengths and weaknesses of St. Olaf and present an overarching measure of their impact. With the goal of giving Regents direct access to student opinion on this issue, and with BORSC’s broader goal of increasing constructive dialogue between students and Regents, we are excited to offer students the opportunity to converse with Regents over lunch on May 6.

Photos: Same-Sex Marriage Debate

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 | Political Awareness Committee

Same Sex Marriage Debate Photos On March 9th, the Political Awareness Committee hosted a same-sex marriage debate in the Pause. The two debaters were John Corvino, a philosophy professor at Wayne State University and Glenn Stanton, the Senior Analyst for Marriage and Sexuality and the Director of Social Research and Cultural Affairs at Focus on the Family. While the event was considered a debate, both participants were committed to reasoned dialogue and discussion, opening the door to more student engagement and involvement. Over 400 students attended.
