  1. Will says:

Classic rock all the way! Skynyrd would be off the hook

  2. Arielle says:

Brett Dennen, Ingrid Michaelson, Vampire Weekend, Adele, Ben Kweller, Modest Mouse, Sarah Bareilles, Relient K, Switchfoot, Death Cab, Regina Spektor, Kate Nash, or Mason Jennings. Any of these would totally make my year.

  3. Isak says:

    Mason Jennings

  4. Jane says:

I agree completely with Reid M

  5. Corey says:

Atmosphere!!! If you brought them here the place would be packed. Vampire Weekend, Mason Jennings, or The Roots would be sick also.

  6. Nick says:

Why is there not a jazz option? Is that still considered devil music in the Lutheran church?

  7. Nick says:

Ahahahaha, I can’t believe that girl suggested Elliott Smith. So funny.

  8. Anders says:

Atmosphere would be great, plus it would have a big draw from the cities. The New Pornographers would also be very cool + high energy.

  9. Andrew says:

    CALYX AND TEEBEE.
    ASIAN DUB FOUNDATION.
    STEEL PANTHER.

WHAT MORE COULD YOU POSSIBLY WANT?

  10. Amanda says:

Damien Rice, Bon Iver, Regina Spektor, Iron and Wine, Andrew Bird and Gnarles Barkley would all be ideal. Josh Groban would be the epitome of amazing.

  11. Andrew says:

Vampire Weekend would be lovely. Anything indie please.

  12. justin vernon says:

    bon iver?

  13. Francis says:

    Why no jazz?

  14. Zach says:

Give us FUN and give us HIGH ENERGY! There is a disturbing amount of people around here who go to a concert and have a contest to see who can stand in one spot with a blank stare the longest instead of getting up and DANCING! Like Reid said, the college indie-pop-rock scene is not gonna do that for us.

I would love to see some more sick hip-hop or rap, maybe Eyedea and Abilities or some of the Doomtree crew. I’d also love some ska, specifically Streetlight Manifesto. You can’t help but dance to that.

  15. Eliza says:

    Passion Pit, please please.

  16. Erik says:

    Ratatat or Passion Pit.

Or a good DJ like Benga or Diplo

  17. Andy Nail says:

    Passion Pit

  18. Sophie says:

    atmosphere would be AMAZING

  19. Erik says:

I mean…we had The Hold Steady already. Lets get some Electronic Awesomeness.

  20. Joel says:

Has nobody here been to a metal show?
It is by FAR the most exciting, fun, and exhilarating show genre out there. I am overall disappointed in Olaf’s bad taste in music. Give metal a legitimate chance.

  21. Matt Evans says:

    Apocalyptica! I wish…

  22. Stephanie says:

I also agree with Reid…I really enjoy listening to Andrew Bird and similar artists, but for Spring Concert, we need something danceable!

  23. Mike says:

Were none of you here when Bon Iver was a major, major failure? People want something that will make them excited, something with real energy.

  24. Ian says:

Please Please please can we get some hip hop, for a concert, doesn’t even have to be for the Spring Concert. I know the majority of the school may not be into hip hop, but I’m tired of every concert being Indie-Folk and Rock. Please diversify!

  25. Chris says:

Please please please do not have a repeat of last year’s spring concert. Heiruspecs was a much better show and that was with the KSTO budget. Use the money to get a great act. Atmosphere would be the best choice. Rumor has it that there is going to be another KSTO concert that will feature P.O.S./Doomtree so don’t worry too much when the MEC screws up again. Also Olaf got Busta Rhymes like ten years ago.. just sayin…

  26. Stephen says:

    Mason Jennings!

  27. Becca says:

    ERIC HUTCHINSON!

  28. Eric says:

Why not a previous mainstream rock/pop band that is slightly passed its prime, but not impossible to call for a college show? suggestions: Our Lady Peace, Alkaline Trio, Pepper, Counting Crows, or Social Distortion.

  29. Matt says:

How about an alternative sound and high energy?

    Passion Pit
    Wolf Parade
    Ratatat
    The Management
    Phoenix
    The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Or even better, The Hood Internet.

  30. Jamie says:

As I Lay Dying would be sick! Nothing is more high energy or exciting than metal. Disappointing to see that it is bottom on the list. I guess another indie rock band would be acceptable if they tuned their guitars down a whole step and added a lot more double bass.

  31. Emma says:

Think…Old Crow Medicine Show, Regina Spektor, Fiest, Stars, Wailin’ Jennys.

  32. Austin says:

    Taylor Swift
    T.I.
    Lil Wayne
    Young Jeezy

  33. German Wit says:

For those who think we don’t bring enough hip hop to campus…remember Brother Ali? Dessa? Heiruspecs?

Something danceable is by now a no-brainer. We wanna get DOWN in the spraang. Passion Pit would be a fantastic choice. For someone local, danceable, and a change of pace, check out Trampled by Turtles. Foot stompin bluegrass that any self-conscious Nordic can get down to.

  34. Katherine Lewiston says:

I would vote something local from the Twin Cities, like Ari Herstand and/or Dan Rodriguez. They’ve both got a really great mix of music, and they have some realy great upbeat songs.

  35. Jules says:

Passion Pit is a fairly new alt/electro sensation that has recently made it big and I think it would be great to get something a little outside of the typical mainstream rock/pop comfort zone. I doubt anyone would want Animal Collective, fantastic and crazy as they are. I hear alot of enthusiasm for metal, but the majority of the campus wouldnt want that, myself included.

Passion Pit, Ratatat, Wolf Parade or any number of electro bands are great artists to dance/rock out to. PLEASE do consider Passion Pit seriously. They appeal to electro and rock enthusiasts alike.

  36. Jesus says:

A lot of people have stressed their desire to bring in something dancy. Not everyone is into “dancy” music. Some of us like to go to lots of concerts, but don’t like to dance or bounce around a lot. We don’t necessarily need thumpin bass to have a good time. Andrew Bird is pretty upbeat and would get a huge turnout given the demographics of this campus.

  37. Will Molano says:

    Benga or Minus the Bear

  38. Jules says:

I would also say Keane, Muse or The Decemberists, but I highly doubt such high profile bands would want to come to the frozen hinterlands for a concert…

  39. Matt says:

These would be good if you can get them:

Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Passion Pit, Minus The Bear, Andrew Bird, any good DJ (i.e. Crystal Method, Diplo, Deltron, Cut Copy etc. something/one like Beck), Spoon, LCD Soundsystem, Lemon Jelly, Propellerheads, RJD2

These are all probably too big, but a sound like it would be good to have:

    Bravery/Nada Surf/Cake/Modest Mouse/Bloc Party/Fatboy Slim/Pendulum/Flaming Lips/MGMT

Particle would be good, upbeat electronic jam that you can dance to, and they prefer smaller venues most of the time. Pretty Lights would be amazing as well, great DJ.

Bon Iver probably doesn’t have time to come anymore. I’ve seen him many times, 2 years ago he played in a coffee house for 30 people with a 5$ admission, now he plays for $75,000 a show and gets rated the best show at Bonnaroo.

If you get Ratatat I’ll love you forever.

  40. Matt says:

Also, by the looks of previous lineups and comments on here, we need dance music. Bon Iver is very mellow and haunting – as much as I love the guy, you can’t dance to it, even he knows it.

  41. Ethan says:

You guys should try to get either The Black Keys or M. Ward

  42. Katarina says:

Indie-folk does NOT a good concert make, unless you want to fall asleep. We need something that we can dance to!

  43. sonja says:

    memo:
Mason Jennings, Bon Iver, Ben Kweller
have already been here in the last two years! sorry to those of you that missed them.

  44. Chuck Norris says:

I decree that Passion Pitt come to St. Olaf. Now you can end this discussion board.

  45. Poptimist says:

    Also, same with Brother Ali.

For those of you who don’t want to dance: you do know that there are lots of performances each and every week on this campus without “thumpin bass,” where you can’t dance at all because you have to sit? They’re the recitals of the Music Department. They’re totally free and feature your fellow students and maybe some music faculty. The technical skill is generally way higher than your typical indie band, too. Check out Urness Recital Hall or Studio A (or maybe the chapel) for some good times. (You can even cross your arms the whole time, just like at an indie show!)

For the rest of us: yes, please, something fun with a beat. And preferably not a DJ–part of the joy of a concert is LIVE music.

(Also, yeah, where the hell is jazz? Or is that banned along with liquor?)

  46. CRUISE CONTROL says:

I recommend Silversun Pickups, Flatfoot 56, Gary Jules, or Gogol Bordello! All different styles, but all good!

  47. CRUISE CONTROL says:

I would also second Passion Pit

  48. Milon Trilling says:

You all should give heavy metal a chance! It’s all not as bad as you expect it too be. Some bands that would be practical to have come here and are moderate enough that most people would probably enjoy themselves:

    Creature Feature
    Emilie Autumn
    Hate in the Box
    The Birthday Massacre
Charm City Devils (Saw them live and they are intense and put on a great show)
Kittie (I’m not sure how easy it would be to get them)
    Porcelain and the Tramps
Flyleaf (Saw them live and they are so full of energy and such a fun band to see)

These are just some suggestions. All of these bands are unbelievable live and great musicians. They all are quite moderate heavy metal bands without much screaming (except for Kittie). Would you judge someone on their skin color? If not then why judge music on the label it has? We are supposed to be open to new things here, so why not experiment with some music that you might just like?

  49. Anne says:

    Girl Talk.

  50. Susan says:

PASSION PIT please! ….or Ghostland Observatory?
