Yes. Step 1 = Indie Rock is #1. Step 2 = Let’s get Andrew Bird.
Then my life will be complete. And so will yours.
Country, Luke Bryan.
My life will be complete after this.
Any act that is fun to watch and easy to get into would be nice. The Hold Steady was a fantastic choice for Fall Concert, for example, because they have high energy and enjoyable music.
As long as it’s not boring, I think it’ll be a good concert.
PASSION PIT WILL MELT YOUR FACES!!!
Cake
PRETTY LIGHTS!!!!!!!
I’m sorry, but if it’s Country…. someone please shoot me. I have very strong feelings AGAINST country.
It saddens me to see that my fellow Olies have such trite taste in music.
Is there any way to make a band suggestion and provide music for judging if the band is little known?
TAYLOR SWIFT! TAYLOR SWIFT! TAYLOR SWIFT!
Bluegrass: yes. Country: no.
Girltalk all the way!!!!
Dan Deacon, Nurses, The Tallest Man On Earth, Tender Forever.
Yeah Cake! Or Andrew Bird.
Barcelona, Cake, Ingrid Michaelson
Andrew Bird = best idea since sliced bread
Vampire Weekend!!!!
also, bluegrass – yes, country – no.
Eric Hutchinson or Brett Dennen, both are high energy and amazing live!
Cake!
Passion Pit FTW
All Time Low. So much fun live.
Islands
Bluegrass is infinitely different than country, please.
Old Crow Medicine Show = win, Taylor Swift = fail.
Also: Blitzen Trapper, Chromeo, The Black Keys, Great Lake Swimmers, The Pines.
We should get Jewel! She’s a fantastic live performer; very energetic, fun, down-to-earth, and she actually has stuff to say in her music
Can you guys with MEC give the students a general idea of who’s within the realm of possibility? I think that might be helpful. How about someone like Ingrid Michaelson? Or Mat Kearney?
please please not taylor swift.
Andrew Bird would be amazing. that would be the concert of a lifetime.
Bob Dylan is old, he’s not doing anything anyways and most likely could come to Minnesota. He might be costly, but just think of the numbers of people around who would come!
I absolutely agree with Gabe!
We were so close to having Andrew Bird come last year… it’s a real shame that we missed the mark. He would draw an enormous crowd from the Saint Olaf campus, and (given that I received requests for tickets last year from friends in Madison and Chicago when I mentioned the possibility of his visiting our campus) he would draw a large crowd from outside the school.
Andrew Bird. All the way.
bluegrass yes country no
I’m interested in anything that people can easily dance to and that brings a LOT of energy
the Avett Brothers
Old Crow Medicine Show
Dan Deacon
Against Me!
The Black Keys
The Cold War Kids
Two Gallants
P.O.S.
Common
DangerDoom
The Decemberists
Eek-a-Mouse
Gomez
Grizzly Bear
The Hives
Josh Ritter
Michael Franti
Ratatat
Slightly Stoopid
STS9
Vampire Weekend
Willy Mason
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
I have no idea how many of these are even feasible, and I realize this is one huge recommendation list, but at least I know I gave my full input.
Guster or Umphrey’s McGee! also eric Hutchinson, Maritime, Joshua Radin, Kings of Convenience, Whitest Boy Alive, Keane
Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens, Of Montreal, St. Vincent, Animal Collective, Belle and Sebastian(best of luck)
Oh! Passion Pit!
passion pit!!
Andrew Bird all the way!!!
ANDREW BIRD! Matt Costa, Elliott Smith, The Shins…anything music lover or Thando mentioned
Gaslight anthem or the Sounds, both solid pop/rock bands, neither too big. great live shows, and the Sounds are from Scandinavia.
Andrew Bird or Sufjan Stevens would be amazing.
COLDPLAY!!!!
Rupa and the April Fishes!
Motion City Soundtrack
Andrew Bird definitely!!!
ALL TIME LOW!! Amazing live!! I will personally make sure every ticket is sold if they come.
To the person who suggested Elliott Smith: you know he’s dead, right? (His suicide is only slightly less famous than, say, Cobain’s.) What is this, Zombie Concert?
I, too, agree that bluegrass is NOT country, and would be fun and awesome. (Too bad Nickel Creek broke up.)
I suppose it would kill us as college students to listen to something Pitchfork *didn’t* like.
In conclusion, how about something other than white boys with guitars? (White boys with laptops and maybe keyboards is even worse.) There’s a whole world of non-indie music out there! Most of it you can dance to!
If we’re going to go with white boys+guitars, Gaslight Anthem is a wonderful suggestion.
(Also, who the fuck can dance to the Decemberists? Oh, and I’ve seen Vampire Weekend live and they were terrible and lacked energy.)
Can we please have a good well known band for once? common. Since I have bin at St. Olaf we have not brought anyone big to campus. If we are going to be spend money on this stuff lets at least get someone amazing. I can’t believe people we can’t get someone like the script, cobra starship, boys like girls, Kings of Leon or owl city. These bands are not too big and would most likely be willing to come. Seriously though, please do not waste our money on another local or weird instrumental band that no one knows of.
Def not another indie rock band after having hold steady already this year…
Hip Hop: Blu, Charles Hamilton, The Cool Kids, Wale, P.O.S, Kid Cudi, Wiz Khalifa, K’naan
Electronic: Girltalk, Ratatat,The Avalanches, Super Mash Bros, Octopus Project
Last year Carleton had Wale, and they had the Cool Kids the year before. Macalester had Blackalicious last spring. Why is it that St.Olaf can’t get a good hip hop act to come? (Brother Ali= wack… I respect his hustle but weak performer). After Hellogoodbye and Hold Steady, some good hip hop is long overdue.
Enough of this singer-songwriter college-pop garbage. We need a Spring Concert artist people can get the **** down to, something for students to get buckwild, serious dancin hyphy **** you know, for a memorable experience.
Spring Concert should be the biggest party of the year, not some ho hum lull of musical artistry which discourages crowd participation.
In other words:
electronica, dubstep gangsta bass glitch loudness DANCEability : brings the party to the Pause!
jangle pop, soft keyboards, quiet indie kid songwriters = brings the pause to the party.
I would not go see Andrew Bird or Sufjan Stevens.
Eric Hutchinson!
Steve Miller Band – ’nuff said
Andrew bird is a great great idea and/or something like man man Gogol bordello or pale young gentlemen. I think if we could get dan deacon or ratatat that would be amazing.
